The transition to a low-carbon energy system, as understood by the scientific and policy communities, will involve a major redesign of the energy system, primarily around renewable sources, in accordance with 2030 and 2050 targets that the European Commission has defined. SENTINEL, the Sustainable Energy Transitions Laboratory, is developing energy system modelling support for this transition.
Within SENTINEL, ICTA-UAB is the leader of WP2 ‘Social and Environmental transition constraints’, which aims to advance the state-of-the-art in modeling the social and environmental aspects of system transformations. ICTA-UAB will develop the ENVIRO module which combines the capabilities of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Multi-Scale Integrated Assessment of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM) to assess potential environmental impacts and systemic biophysical constraints of diverse future energy scenarios.
