Verónica Arcas Pilz, 39th PhD at Sostenipra
On June 3, 2022, Sostenipra researcher Verónica Arcas Pilz defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Alternative fertilizers for urban agriculture within the circular economy framework”. Verónica has successfully completed her interdisciplinary thesis aimed at finding environmentally sustainable and technically feasible solutions to reduce the impact of fertilization in urban agriculture. To this end, she has conducted experiments with nutrients recovered from wastewater, in this case through struvite, and combined synergies with nitrogen-fixing bacteria to reduce the impact of producing and applying fertilizers in hydroponic crops.
Her thesis was discussed with an international panel consisting of Dr. Laura Talens (Sostenipra), Dr. Elisa Lopez-Capel (Newcastle University) and Dr. Antonella Samoggia (University of Bologna).
