BIDEKO biodegradable batteries are progressing

The second week of April was marked by the biannual meeting of research groups working on the BIDEKO project on biodegradable batteries.

The event was hosted by ICTA-UAB and the School of Engineering of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The BIDEKO project consists of the design of a new generation of biodegradable coin batteries to meet the energy demands of precision agriculture control devices, from a sustainable circular economy perspective. Ecodesign methods and life cycle environmental assessments are used.

The research groups came with the aim of presenting the progress made within the framework of the project, including GICOM, CREAF, BCMaterials, Gaiker, ArcelorMittal and Sostenipra, detailing the results of their research and discussing the next steps to follow. It was also agreed to request an extension of one more year for the project.

However, the event was not limited solely to the exhibitions of the progress. A guided tour of the ICTA facilities was planned, explaining, and showcasing the peculiarities and features of the building. The GICOM staff also allowed us visit their laboratories located at the School of Engineering, and finally, the CREAF staff showed us their facilities in Caldes de Montbui, where they taught us some trials of the project, where batteries were buried in the ground. Finally, the event ended with a lunch for the attending members.
